Blog · The worth-it scale

Is AI visibility worth it? It depends on your stage.

For a new site, most of it isn’t. The basics are a checklist you can do yourself. For an established site in a market where one customer is worth a lot, it can be worth real money.

Most people selling “AI SEO” sell the same link package to everyone. This is the scale we go through in every audit instead: what’s worth paying for at each stage, and what isn’t worth it yet.

The one rule

You don’t paint the walls before the foundation is poured.

Never pay for a later stage before you’ve cleared the earlier ones. Links and placements pointing to a site AI can’t crawl, or doesn’t understand, are wasted money. So a site that isn’t ready gets a no from us, not an invoice.

Which stage are you at?

Start at the bottom and stop at the first step you can’t say yes to. That’s the stage worth working on, and everything above it can wait.

Each stage below starts with the signs to look for. Start at stage 0 and stop at the first one that sounds like you.

The scale

What’s worth paying for, stage by stage.

Each stage has the signs you’re there, the work worth doing, and what it’s worth paying. Tick things off as you go.

Stage 0 · Foundation

New or unindexed site

The signs: the domain is under about six months old, few pages show up in a site: search, and nothing shows up in Bing.

Worth doing

Stage 1 · Foundation

Indexed, but machines don’t understand it

The signs: your pages are indexed, but AI answers get your company wrong, describe it vaguely or mix it up with others.

Worth doing

Stage 2 · Framing

Understood, but doesn’t answer the questions

The signs: AI knows your company, but doesn’t name it when someone asks the questions buyers actually ask.

Worth doing

Stage 3 · Exterior

Good site, no outside proof

The signs: an established site with good content, but few or no inbound links or mentions. AI cites third parties (reviews, lists, forums, news), and you’re not on them.

Stage 4 · Exterior

Competitive vertical

The signs: AI answers are dominated by affiliates, toplists and big brands, and every new customer is worth a lot. Think iGaming, finance or betting.

A rough calculation

How much is worth paying?

Value per month ≈ relevant AI questions × how often you’re named × how many of those become a customer × what a customer is worth.

If that figure is small, stop at stages 0–1, and we’ll say so. If it’s bigger, keep monthly spend to a share of it you can live with, as a capped test with a clear stop point. These are rough numbers, not a forecast. Here, small means under $1,500 a month, the price of our audit, and large means $15,000 or more.

At any stage

Not worth paying for.

llms.txt on its own, as “the fix”

It’s cheap to add, and we have one ourselves. But the value is low, and it won’t fix anything on this scale.

Mass-produced AI content

It adds pages, not facts. What’s worth quoting is specific and checkable, and that’s the part mass production leaves out.

Links pointing to a site that isn’t indexed

If AI can’t find the site, the link doesn’t get you into the answer. Clear stage 0 first.

A monthly retainer for stage 0–1 basics

These are one-off jobs. Once they’re done, there’s nothing to pay for every month.
